DENTAL TREATMENT

SEDATION

Sedation is a valuable tool in helping nervous and anxious patients overcome their dental fears and anxieties. We offer various sedation options, all of which can induce a dream-like state, ensuring that patients remain relaxed and unaware throughout their treatment. Through these sedation methods, we've successfully assisted patients in overcoming their dental phobias and receiving the necessary treatment to achieve their desired smiles. Our trained practitioners can provide both oral and inhalation sedation in our practice. Additionally, if required, we can arrange for a specialist sedationist to administer intravenous sedation during your visit.

FAQ

Most frequent questions and answers

WHAT IS SEDATION?

Sedation involves the use of medication to help patients relax while remaining conscious and comfortable during a treatment. At DRKS, we offer various sedation options, including intravenous (IV) sedation, as well as oral and inhalation sedation (sometimes referred to as 'happy air').

WHO IS IT SUITABLE FOR?

Sedation is generally suitable for most patients, and we will assess its suitability for every patient who requests or requires it. We commonly use sedation for patients who experience dental anxiety, fear of a specific treatment, or apprehension about visiting the dentist. It has been instrumental in helping many patients overcome their fears and phobias. Additionally, sedation is frequently employed during long or complex treatments, such as implant procedures, to ensure patient comfort and relaxation throughout.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF SEDATION USED FOR?

IV sedation is administered intravenously and must be performed by a trained anaesthetist or sedationist, a service we can arrange at DRKS. It is typically used in longer or more complex treatments, as it induces a deeper state of relaxation. Oral and inhalation sedation can be administered by our trained team members at the practice. These types of sedation are often used for our more nervous patients to help them feel relaxed and comfortable. We will determine which sedation option is most suitable for you during a consultation.

WILL I HAVE TO BE ACCOMPANIED HOME AFTER SEDATION?

Both IV sedation and oral sedation require a friend or family member to accompany you home. If we use inhalation sedation or 'happy air' for your treatment, you can return to your day as usual, as the recovery time is much faster.

WHAT DOES IT FEEL LIKE?

While all three sedation techniques have slightly different effects, most patients report feeling like they are drifting off in a warm, comfortable bed. Many say they don't even remember the treatment time.
